I use this book the way others refer to the bible. Gracian’s Art of Worldly Wisdom is a od of maxims containing excellent, practical advice; very Senecan, and, at times, Machiavellian balthasaar sentiment but much more applicable than The Prince.
His proto-existentialist writings were lauded by Nietzsche and Schopenhauer. He spent time in Huesca, where he befriended the local scholar Vincencio Juan de Lastanosa, who helped him achieve an important milestone in his intellectual upbringing.
I own Martin Fischer’s translation and when I opened it up to read it, it made no sense to me grammatically or syntactically. For guesses and doubts about the extent of his talents arouse more veneration than accurate knowledge of them, be they ever so great. Something in here worlvly everyone, from saintly grandmothers to the most outrageous nihilist, probably a little more for the latter. So, if you want to get someone’s more understandable translation, Christopher Maurer is the translator you want. While most of us acquire wisdom naturally through living our lives, it certainly can’t hurt to pick up a really good book for additional words of advice.

Robert Greene strip-mined Gracian for 48 Laws of Power, but again IMHO, it’s always best to refer back to rhe seminal source even after being presented with as good a digest as Greene presented.
Each paragraph contained a string of one-sentence aphorisms that give the appearance of world-weary wisdom to mask their overgeneralization. Some merited a better century, for all that is good does not always triumph. I DO also read the Bible, The Qu’ran and other religous books as well However, the advice in this little book is invaluable. This is but one of warnings, facts, and intuitive words that he, with wit and a great understanding of people, wrote down as a guidebook to success in life.
Well-spent leisure is worth more than work.
