Bisson is the author of several novels: As an aside, now that more than twenty years have gone by since the incident on which this story is based, would new young readers understand what this is about? Before you read it you may want a refresher on the Oklahoma City bombing.

It consists entirely of dialogue between several people and an investigator. I am leaving my review up because I disagree with the librarian’s decision. He has written two YA novels for Lucasfilm. The bum in the dumpster is Timothy McVeigh, who is a real person.

I loved it when I first read it, but the more I have thought about it, the more I have come to dislike it.

Thanks for telling us about the problem. I had a hard time hating them, in spite of what they done, or their daddy done, or however you want to put it.

Try re-reading it with a “the author doesn’t really think this is a good idea” filter on. He is one of the classic sci-fi short story writers.

Obviously this is targetted specifically at the argument that the death penalty is a justifiable form of social retribution, though it also makes one think about general social hysteria and moral panics such as we have seen in the UK over paedophiles this summer.

Books by Terry Bisson. I happen to agree with the basic point the author is making but that doesn’t make the way he chose to make the point any more acceptable to me.
